Kayaking Expedition
Via Lakes Šakarvai and Žeimenys, and the Rivers Žeimena and Neris
Creating lasting memories for those who seek adventure
The Ultimate Expedition: Kayaking the Žeimena and Neris
Many of us dream of a multi-day kayak adventure with a close group of friends. The taste of morning coffee by the river, the scent of campfire smoke, deep conversations with friends and yourself, sun-kissed cheeks, a pleasant ache in your arms and shoulders, and the wind in your hair… A total sense of freedom! This is exactly what a kayak expedition on the Žeimena and Neris rivers offers—it is precisely what you need to turn your wildest dreams into reality.
The Žeimena is one of Lithuania’s most famous and beloved rivers, flowing through the eastern part of the country. As a right-bank tributary of the Neris, the Žeimena is renowned for its tranquility, picturesque banks, and perfect conditions for active leisure.
The Journey: 135 km That is the distance you would cover paddling from Kaltanėnai to Vilnius. Is it a lot or a little? On average, a kayak travels at about 5 km/h. By paddling 10 hours a day, you can comfortably reach Vilnius with just two overnight stays.
Want more? From Palūšė: If you decide you want a longer journey, start from Palūšė—the trip extends to 150 km.
The ultimate challenge: If that’s still not enough, let’s keep paddling all the way to Klaipėda!
Available: All year round (as long as the rivers and lakes are not frozen).
Skill level: Beginner friendly. (ZW (WW 1-/+))
Obstacles: Fallen trees (river blockages), and aquatic vegetation.
The Žeimena flows through the Švenčionys and Vilnius districts and is a right-bank tributary of the Neris. The river is 80 km long. It originates from Lake Žeimenys near Kaltanėnai and flows into the Neris at the 213 km mark from the Neris’ mouth, near Santaka, located 12 km south of Pabradė.
From Kaltanėnai to Pabradė, the riverbed is winding, featuring a terraced valley that is remarkably wide (up to 5 km in some areas), with valley slopes reaching heights of 25–30 m. Near Pabradė, the valley narrows to 1 km, widens slightly further downstream, and narrows again 2–3 km before reaching its confluence with the Neris.
For your safety, participants must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
