Kayaking Expedition
Juodieji Lakajai – Vilnius Through the Lakaja, Žeimena, and Neris Rivers

One of the most scenic long-distance journeys in Eastern Lithuania, starting from the deep waters of Lake Juodieji Lakajai.
The Lakaja River: A Journey Through the Wilderness
The Lakaja is a favorite among water tourists for a reason. Its straightforward route and scenic banks are full of discoveries. This short, 33-kilometer river is the largest tributary of the Žeimena, known for its steady current and surprising depth, as it is fed by the numerous lakes scattered throughout the Aukštaitija forests.
Your journey begins at a campsite near Lake Juodieji Lakajai, close to the village of Lakaja. Once in your kayaks, head along the right shore of the lake. After about 150 meters, turn toward the mouth of the Lakaja River, hidden behind lush reeds. Initially, you may encounter a short section of fallen trees. While the river might look shallow at first, the dark patches on the riverbed indicate depths of up to 4 meters. A quick tip: if you decide to swim, be careful of strong, cold undercurrents formed by forest springs.
Cultural Landmarks and Wildlife After passing the bridge on the Joniškis–Labanoro road, the river begins to wind more gracefully as you pass the villages of Palakajys and Fedariškiai. Fedariškiai was founded by Old Believers, and you’ll notice the unique architecture reminiscent of old Russian fairy-tale huts.
Eventually, you will reach the small Lake Aldikis. Keep your eyes on the sky or the shoreline here—the majestic White-tailed Eagle, Lithuania’s largest bird of prey and a protected species, is often spotted in this area.
Navigating the Lakes Paddling about 0.8 km across Lake Aldikis, you will find a 1 km channel connecting it to Lake Lakajas. You will pass the villages of Paaldikis and Žukaučizna. Though Lake Lakajas initially looks wide, it narrows in the middle, forming small peninsulas. Navigate through the narrows, and make sure to take the left-hand channel—this is where the Lakaja River resumes its flow.
The Most Romantic Stretch Once back on the river, let the current carry you through the most beautiful part of the trip: a 17 km stretch winding through deep, serene forests. This beauty is only accessible by water. You will pass the cozy villages of Vilkaslastis, Argirdiškė, and Lamanina. If you need a break, there is a lovely rest area near Argirdiškė where you can catch your breath and soak in the silence of nature.
Available: All year round (as long as the rivers and lakes are not frozen).
Skill level: Beginner friendly. (ZW (WW 1))
Obstacles: Low footbridges, fallen trees (river blockages), and aquatic vegetation.
Your journey begins: at Lake Juodieji Lakajai. The Lakaja is widely considered one of the most beautiful and captivating rivers in the Aukštaitija region, winding through the heart of the ancient Labanoras Forest. The banks are heavily forested and offer numerous scenic rest areas. With its crystal-clear water and untouched nature, this section typically takes 7–10 hours, depending on your pace and breaks.
The Žeimena River 50 km Next, you enter the Žeimena River. Here, you have approximately 50 km of wide, calm waters with sandy banks and a sandy riverbed. Often flowing through serene pine forests, this part of the journey is ideal for a peaceful and relaxing paddle.
The Neris 50 km Finally, you will reach the confluence where the Žeimena meets the Neris. From here, the final 50 km of active paddling begins. You will pass through Nemenčinė and Skirgiškės, eventually reaching Ožkiniai, the historic Verkiai Watermill, and finally finishing your adventure at the White Bridge (Baltasis tiltas) in the very heart of Vilnius!
