An extraordinary journey from the historic town of Dubingiai all the way to the heart of Vilnius.

Lake Asveja: The Majestic Legend of Dubingiai

Asveja, also known as Lake Dubingiai, stretches across the Molėtai, Švenčionys, and Vilnius districts. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Lithuania. Its winding, high, and steep shores were formed during the ice age, creating what geographers call a „ribbon” or „trough” lake—nestled deep within a long, narrow depression.

To a first-time visitor, Asveja might look like a wide, majestic river. It is the longest lake in Lithuania, stretching about 22 kilometers (reaching 30 kilometers when including the Žalktynė, Vyriogala, and Dubingiai bays). With a shoreline of 72.5 kilometers, circling it is a true challenge for any explorer.

A Gateway to the Baltic Sea Ancient legends promise that through Asveja, one can reach the widest seas. This is not mere folklore—the lake connects via small streams to the Žeimena River, which flows into the Neris, then the Nemunas, and finally leads to the Baltic Sea. Often compared to the beauty of Switzerland, Asveja enchants travelers with its five large islands, hidden peninsulas, crystal-clear water, and lush forests.

The Land of Grass Snakes Asveja is also a place of myth and nature’s mystery, famously beloved by grass snakes (žalčiai). In spring, you might see them swimming in the lake or basking in the sun along the paths. In Lithuanian mythology, the grass snake is a sacred symbol of luck and well-being. The locals in the Dubingiai region cherish and protect these beautiful creatures, even installing special roadside fences to ensure their safety.

Available: All year round (as long as the rivers and lakes are not frozen).

Skill level: Beginner friendly. (ZW (WW 1))

Obstacles: Dams, small rapids, and aquatic vegetation.

The Start: Lake Asveja Your journey begins at Lake Asveja near the historic town of Dubingiai, close to the source of the Dubinga River. You will paddle across the lake for about 15 km (approx. 3–4 hours).

The Dubinga River ~18 km As you exit Lithuania’s longest lake, the Dubinga becomes a narrow, winding stream. It flows through the picturesque landscapes of the Asveja Regional Park. The current is calm, but be prepared for some fallen trees or shallow spots, especially during dry seasons.

Pabradė Hydroelectric Dam You will encounter a dam with a height of 10 meters. It is most convenient to carry your kayaks around it (portage) via the left bank.

The Žeimena River ~18 km At the confluence of the Dubinga and Žeimena, you will reach the town of Pabradė. Here, you join the Žeimena River. It is wide, with a gentle current, sandy banks, and a sandy bottom, often winding through beautiful pine forests. This section is perfect for a peaceful, relaxing paddle.

The Neris and the Finish in Vilnius 50 km Finally, you will reach the confluence of the Žeimena and the Neris. From this point, about 50 km of active paddling awaits. You will pass through Nemenčinė and Skirgiškės, eventually reaching Ožkiniai, the Verkiai Watermill, and finally, your finish line at the White Bridge (Baltasis tiltas) in the very heart of Vilnius!

For your safety, participants must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
